Christmas Day

Santa brought Matti a bear bigger than her! We had a wonderful Christmas which we were able to celebrate with Dana's family this year. Matti was definitely not forgotten by any of the family. It was so much fun to have kids around on Christmas morning. It brings back some of the magical aspects of Christmas that seem to fade a little as you get older. Matti is getting closer and closer to being able to roll over. She can make it about 3/4 of the way and then that silly arm gets in the way of letting her roll over the whole way. Matti has discovered her fingers and seems quite fascinated by them, particularly as a mid-day snack!

Mommy's First Day Back at Work

Daddy is babysitting - or rather "parenting" - Peanut today as Mommy went back to work. It's a tough transition and it will take some time for Mommy to be separated from the baby for this long, so we're easing into it. To help Mommy feel better, Daddy and Peanut made a video to say hello!

Our Hoot Owl

Yesterday and last night Aubrey wasn't quite sure what she wanted: fuss, eat, fuss, fill a diaper, fuss, sleep, fuss some more. Daddy sent Mommy to the gym to relax and managed the chaos for awhile.

We often joke that Aubrey looks like a space alien at night, when all you can see in the dark is her grayish, perfectly round little peanut head with two black eyes staring at you. It sometimes makes you want to look out the window to see if the mother ship is parked outside. Now that her personality is really starting to develop, she thought she'd have some fun with Daddy as he was putting her to bed. Her eyes were closed, but as he was laying her down in her bassinet the little black eyes popped open. She grinned and said a quick little "hoo!" It was hard not to say "hoo!" back.

The Eyes Have It

The one sure-fire (well, pretty much sure-fire) way to get Aubrey to sleep in the evenings is to sit with her in the rocking chair, at just the right angle so her head gently lolls a little bit back and forth, back and forth, until the sleepy time magic starts to take effect. Hence the blog name, since we're rockin' with her pretty much every day.

At least for Daddy, some of my favorite moments have been those times when I'm rocking her and she's not quite ready to go to sleep. She looks up at me and smiles, and I look down at her and smile back, and we'll just hold that gaze and smile at each other for a long time. Her little eyes will twinkle like she has a little secret to tell me, that she can't quite put into words yet. But sometimes she'll let loose with an "oooooh" to try to tell me anyway.

Aubrey's First Time On Stage

Since Grandma and Grandpa couldn't make it for Aubrey's baptism, we obtained a top-notch video of the event (thanks Caressa) so they could watch it at home. Grandma was quite impressed that Aubrey was a perfect little angel through the whole ceremony.

Grandpa's having all kinds of fun hanging out with the baby today. Grandma and Dana went downtown today, to get groceries and browse the stores. Aubrey got her first Christmas tree ornament. This afternoon Grandma and I went out to the farm to pick up a few things, after visiting Shirley for a brief payment.

Happy Turkey Day

Check out my cool boots!

Turkey Day 2008 - mmm mmm good! We drove up north to Grandma and Grandpa N's new apartment. So Grandma wouldn't have to cook, we ordered a turkey dinner from Boston Market and assigned her the sweet potatoes and the lefse. No fuss, no muss, and every bit of it was delicious. Aubrey was a little annoyed that she couldn't have some mashed potatoes with gravy, but we assured her she would get to taste everything in about four hours - with a little additional processing.

The new apartment building is TOTALLY AWESOME and we taught Grandma how to visit our blog. I am sitting in a lounge at the one computer with Internet access. Behind me is a pool table and classic movie posters line the walls. Bogey and Bacall are locked in a worried embrace (perhaps they just looked at their 401(k)s) over my left shoulder. Nothing we love more than attention to detail.

What is it about Bailey's that makes coffee so wonderful? Don't tell us. We know.

The Ultimate Soothers - swinging and sucking

She also took a pacifier for the first time today. Although it must have been a slim opening in time because a few hours later she would have nothing to do with it again.

Sunday Happenings

We went to church this morning with Aubrey wearing a dress her mommy wore as a baby. Of course this meant she had a big diaper blowout in church. Oh well. Still got a picture of her looking fairly clean in the dress.

Hot Saturday Night

Well, how did we get here?

Eleven weeks later, and Dana and I still look at each other over the breakfast table and say, "Wow. We made a person." I mean, we knew it was theoretically possible - we knew the mechanics, the science behind it, mankind's hard-wired instinct to replicate itself - but to look at our little Peanut, our perfect little person, and it still seems like she had been brought in by a very kindly if somewhat off-course stork.

One thing in particular has stood out about parenthood: we've both developed the capability to stare at a baby for hours on end, enjoy every minute of it, and feel like we've accomplished something significant. At first Peanut slept - and slept, and slept, and slept. Now she wakes up, gives a mighty heave and thrusts her fists into the air like a triumphant prize fighter. This may or may not be followed by an eruption from her teeny bowels. If she sees one of us, she breaks into a wide grin and greets us the only way she knows how - "ooooh, gheee." And we keep up the conversation: "Oooooh! Aaahhh! Geeee!" So I ask you, who's having more fun?

It has been an adventure beyond compare, getting to know this wonderful little girl. Our lives have been turned upside down, no doubt about it. But even one of those precious looks makes all the diaper changes, the spit-up epaulets on our shoulders, the lack of sleep, all worthwhile.

How to celebrate? Start a blog! We've joined the Age of Technology and figured out LinkedIn, Facebook, all that stuff. Just wouldn't seem right without a blog where Daddy could wax poetic after a couple of beers. A little window into our daily lives in The Heart of Suburbia, reflections upon our fantastic voyage of parenthood, and such other nonsense as we decide to sprinkle in here and there. Come along for the ride, we hope you'll enjoy it.
