Our Hoot Owl
We often joke that Aubrey looks like a space alien at night, when all you can see in the dark is her grayish, perfectly round little peanut head with two black eyes staring at you. It sometimes makes you want to look out the window to see if the mother ship is parked outside. Now that her personality is really starting to develop, she thought she'd have some fun with Daddy as he was putting her to bed. Her eyes were closed, but as he was laying her down in her bassinet the little black eyes popped open. She grinned and said a quick little "hoo!" It was hard not to say "hoo!" back.

The Eyes Have It
At least for Daddy, some of my favorite moments have been those times when I'm rocking her and she's not quite ready to go to sleep. She looks up at me and smiles, and I look down at her and smile back, and we'll just hold that gaze and smile at each other for a long time. Her little eyes will twinkle like she has a little secret to tell me, that she can't quite put into words yet. But sometimes she'll let loose with an "oooooh" to try to tell me anyway.

Aubrey's First Time On Stage
Grandpa's having all kinds of fun hanging out with the baby today. Grandma and Dana went downtown today, to get groceries and browse the stores. Aubrey got her first Christmas tree ornament. This afternoon Grandma and I went out to the farm to pick up a few things, after visiting Shirley for a brief payment.

Happy Turkey Day
Check out my cool boots!
Turkey Day 2008 - mmm mmm good! We drove up north to Grandma and Grandpa N's new apartment. So Grandma wouldn't have to cook, we ordered a turkey dinner from Boston Market and assigned her the sweet potatoes and the lefse. No fuss, no muss, and every bit of it was delicious. Aubrey was a little annoyed that she couldn't have some mashed potatoes with gravy, but we assured her she would get to taste everything in about four hours - with a little additional processing.
The new apartment building is TOTALLY AWESOME and we taught Grandma how to visit our blog. I am sitting in a lounge at the one computer with Internet access. Behind me is a pool table and classic movie posters line the walls. Bogey and Bacall are locked in a worried embrace (perhaps they just looked at their 401(k)s) over my left shoulder. Nothing we love more than attention to detail.
What is it about Bailey's that makes coffee so wonderful? Don't tell us. We know.

Well, how did we get here?
One thing in particular has stood out about parenthood: we've both developed the capability to stare at a baby for hours on end, enjoy every minute of it, and feel like we've accomplished something significant. At first Peanut slept - and slept, and slept, and slept. Now she wakes up, gives a mighty heave and thrusts her fists into the air like a triumphant prize fighter. This may or may not be followed by an eruption from her teeny bowels. If she sees one of us, she breaks into a wide grin and greets us the only way she knows how - "ooooh, gheee." And we keep up the conversation: "Oooooh! Aaahhh! Geeee!" So I ask you, who's having more fun?
It has been an adventure beyond compare, getting to know this wonderful little girl. Our lives have been turned upside down, no doubt about it. But even one of those precious looks makes all the diaper changes, the spit-up epaulets on our shoulders, the lack of sleep, all worthwhile.
How to celebrate? Start a blog! We've joined the Age of Technology and figured out LinkedIn, Facebook, all that stuff. Just wouldn't seem right without a blog where Daddy could wax poetic after a couple of beers. A little window into our daily lives in The Heart of Suburbia, reflections upon our fantastic voyage of parenthood, and such other nonsense as we decide to sprinkle in here and there. Come along for the ride, we hope you'll enjoy it.
