Dennnis Alvin Nyhus was born on September 17, 1931 in Fergus Falls, MN, the son of Alvin S. and Gladys (Torgrimson) Nyhus. He grew up on the family homestead near Vining, Minnesota and graduated eighth grade from the Vining school. He continued his education in Henning, Minnesota graduating in 1949. Dennis served four years in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict, graduating as a platoon leader from teh Great Lakes Naval Academy in 1951 and rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant in service at Anacortes, WA and Iwakuni, Japan. Upon his return home he attended the Wahpeton State School of Science and became a plumber and pipe fitter, a profession he would hold for the next forty years. He retired from construction work and worked as a custodian for the Henning school from 1980 until 1990. He then worked as a setup foreman for Mid-Central Equipment in Henning for a number of years.
Dennis was married to Carleen Bendikson on June 21, 1958 at United Lutheran Church in Henning. They raised three children and shared over fifty years together.
He and his family raised beef cattle on their Folden township farm for more than forty years. He loved his "kows" and knew each one by neame, keeping their records in a seed corn notebook. He loved to fish and hunt and shot his first deer in 1947. He also liked to make things in his shop and could fix anything. He enjoyed going to Vining to have coffee and breakfast with the "steering committee" every morning.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; twin daughters: Jean and Joan; and his sister-in-law, Marlene. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carleen; daughter: Diane (Charles) Mitzel, Flower Mound, TX; sons: Larry (Janet) Nyhus, Roseau, MN, and Steven (Dana) Nyhus, Eagan, MN; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brother Gayle Nyhus, Henning; and a nephew: Greg (Amy) Nyhus, Canton, GA.
